If you look closely at one hard drive, you will see one noticeable one round circular discs, this is called platter, which is used for information storage. The platters are mounted on a spindle, with spacers in between. In order to increase the capacity of information storage, hard drive must have multiple platters.

In order to read and write from the platter, hard drive uses head. When hard drive is running, the platter spun at a very high speed to allow head to move quickly on the surface. Basically, that's how hard drive works.

The capacity is usually measured in gigbytes. We usually see interfaces including PATA, SATA, SCSI. Nowadays, PATA is gradually phasing out while SATA is the mainstream in the market. The advantage of SATA comparing to PATA is obvious and significant, to name a few of them: Hot-Plug Capability, Increased Bandwidth, Enhanced integrity of Connectivity, Decreased Operating Voltage, Legacy Support...
