Determine your daily needs
What do you need for this laptop? Are you just a student that are looking for some very basic functions from a laptop? These basic functions would include wording processing, web surfing, email checking and so on. In this case, a entry level laptop that costs around $450 would suit your needs and you can save quite a bit of money. However, if you are fond of the latest games, or if you quite often do professional web design and graphic work, then you will be looking for a laptop that costs at least $800.

Define the budget
People may think this should comes the first in the purchasing process. Well, only when you determine what your needs are, then can you accurately define your budget. Simply determining your needs alone is far from enough to determine your budget. Let's say you decide you will use the computer for heavy data processing and some graphic design, and at the same time, you would like to listen to music and do some other things on your laptop. Then you will be looking for a laptop that ranges from $1000-$2000. What we should do here is to further narrow down your budget. Let's say here I can afford a laptop that costs around $1200 only. Next, we should look at the specifications of the laptop.

Choose your cpu, memory, hard drive...
This is the part where you really have to spend quite a bit of time to research on. Manufactures often offer customized laptops even with the same model. For instance, Dell Inspiron 1501 comes with various options where you can find one equipped with Intel Core Duo and another with AMD Turion processor. Memory comes in different capacities and hard drive varies as well. In order to get the best value, you need to understand how powerful each component is and especially the processor and memory. They are the key factors determine the overall performance of your laptop.
